CAF Referee Omar Artan Invited to UEFA Men’s Referee Summer Course in Geneva

CAF referee Omar Artan Abdulkhadir has received a major international recognition after being invited by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to attend the 2026 UEFA Men’s Referee Summer Course in Geneva, Switzerland.

The prestigious refereeing programme is scheduled to take place from August 31 to September 2, 2026, and will bring together officials as part of UEFA’s efforts to enhance refereeing standards and prepare match officials for the demands of top-level football.

Artan Abdulkhadir’s invitation represents a significant development in his refereeing career and further highlights the growing international recognition of his performances on the African continent.

According to the invitation communicated to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Somalia Football Association, UEFA has expressed interest in having the Somali official officiate matches in European competitions.

The development could potentially provide Artan Abdulkhadir with valuable exposure to UEFA’s elite refereeing environment while also giving him the opportunity to contribute his experience to matches involving clubs from across Europe.

UEFA formally communicated the invitation to both CAF and the Somalia Football Association, informing the two football governing bodies of the referee’s selection for the summer course.

For Artan Abdulkhadir, participation in the programme is expected to provide an important platform to interact with some of the continent’s leading referees, technical instructors and officials while gaining further insight into UEFA’s refereeing procedures and standards.

The possibility of officiating European competition matches would also represent another major milestone for the Somali referee, whose career has continued to attract attention beyond his home country.

The invitation comes as recognition of the increasing profile of African referees on the international stage and reflects the opportunities available to top officials who demonstrate consistency and professionalism in continental competitions.

With the UEFA Men’s Referee Summer Course set for Geneva from August 31 to September 2, all eyes will now be on Artan Abdulkhadir as he prepares to take part in the programme and potentially embark on a new chapter of his international refereeing career.

If UEFA’s plans materialise, the Somali official could become part of a wider exchange of refereeing expertise between African and European football, while gaining the opportunity to officiate at one of the highest levels of club football.
