Young Africans SC (Yanga) head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has assured fans that the team is building a strong and competitive squad capable of winning the Premier League and going all the way in the CAF Champions League, despite their disappointing 2-1 loss to Aigles du Congo in an international friendly during Yanga Day 2026 at Uhuru Stadium, Dar es Salaam.
The defeat came even after Young Africans started brightly and took the lead through new striker Peter Shalulile, but defensive mistakes and missed chances ultimately cost them the match.
Mngqithi said Young Africans began the game well, showing intensity in their pressing and creating early attacking threats. He noted that the team looked dangerous both in high pressing and quick counter pressing situations, but failed to fully capitalize on their dominance.
Young Africans’ opening goal came from a penalty, which the coach credited to their aggressive pressing and pressure on the opposition. However, he admitted that the team failed to maintain control after taking the lead.
The coach was honest in his assessment of the goals conceded, describing them as “silly” and avoidable mistakes caused by poor communication in defence. He explained that a back pass to the goalkeeper was not properly supported by the central defenders, leaving the team exposed.
He also pointed out a moment of confusion between players during a build-up situation, which allowed Aigles du Congo to break through and score.
According to Mngqithi, these errors were not tactical failures but individual lapses in concentration that must be corrected. In the second half, Young Africans showed signs of regaining control and creating clear scoring opportunities.
Mngqithi said the team looked likely to score again, producing several good moments in the final third, but poor finishing let them down. Aigles du Congo, on the other hand, made the most of their chances and scored a second goal that secured their victory.
Despite the loss, Mngqithi remained positive, highlighting several encouraging aspects of the team’s performance, including the opportunity to test different players and balance the squad. He emphasized that the team is still in a building phase and that the focus is on long term strength and consistency.
Most importantly, he reassured fans that Young Africans are developing into a powerful side capable of competing at the highest level. He promised that the squad will be strong enough to challenge for the Premier League title and compete seriously in the CAF Champions League.
Mngqithi thanked the Young Africans supporters for their incredible turnout and continued support throughout the match, even in difficult moments. He apologized for not delivering a win on such a special occasion, acknowledging the disappointment felt by the fans.
