CAFCL: Nuno Santos Calls for Collective Defensive Improvement Ahead of Final

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Nuno Santos has candidly addressed his side’s recent defensive vulnerabilities, stressing the need for a collective response as the Brazilians gear up for their CAF Champions League final showdown against AS FAR Rabat.

Speaking ahead of the first leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Santos was quick to dismiss the idea of individual blame, instead pointing to a broader team responsibility. “Obviously, that’s one of the points that we have to be better. That’s not blaming an individual or two. No,” he said. “That’s a problem for the whole team because in the front, if we can do better to help the team on the defensive part, we have to do better as well.”

The Portuguese midfielder highlighted the importance of cohesion across all phases of play, emphasizing that defensive solidity begins from the attacking line. Sundowns, known for their fluid, possession-based approach, have occasionally been exposed at the back in recent outings, an issue Santos believes must be urgently corrected.

“That’s a point we have to review as well with the coaches and improve on what was not too good in the previous matches,” he added, signaling that internal assessments are already underway within the squad.

Sundowns will host the Moroccan giants in Pretoria on Sunday before traveling to Rabat for the decisive second leg at the Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium a week later. With continental glory at stake, Santos’ remarks underline a growing awareness within the squad that fine margins, particularly in defense, could ultimately determine the outcome of the tie.
