Carling Knockout Preview: Orlando Pirates ready to face Milford in round of 16 test

Orlando Pirates turn attention to domestic cup action when they kick off the defence of their Carling Knockout title with a Round of 16 clash against Milford on Tuesday night.

Remaining at the Orlando Amstel Arena for the second of two consecutive cup games, the Buccaneers face a tricky challenge in the top-flight newcomers who have proven to be a formidable opponent in their debut season in the elite tier.

It’s do-or-die for the defending champions, who are in pursuit of their first title in the new season as they come up against looking to go all the way in their debut Carling Knockout campaign.

The Challenge Ahead

Pirates enter another knockout competition following an emphatic continental showing last Friday when they defeated African Stars 4-0 at home. With that victory at the Arena, they complete a 5-0 aggregate win to secure their place in the CAF Champions League group stage.

Attention now shifts back to domestic football, where they will be eager to make their mark after narrowly missing out on the MTN8 title earlier in the campaign.

A home start presents an encouraging prospect for Pirates, who have made Orlando Amstel Arena a difficult venue for visiting teams this season. They remain unbeaten at home across competitions with six clean sheets in eight matches in Soweto venue. That defensive solidity, coupled with a fluid attacking threat that has yielded 21 goals at home will offer encouragement as they begin their pursuit for more silverware.

While an impressive home record offers some optimism, the Buccaneers will go into the contest quite wary of an opponent whose recent form suggests they will pose a stern test. Milford have found their rhythm in their debut top-flight season and head into the contest unbeaten in their last four matches, a run that will give them belief as they prepare for their first cup assignment as a top-flight outfit.

For the KwaZulu-Natal outfit, the occasion presents an opportunity to measure themselves against one of the country’s leading sides. They have shown their pedigree at a similar level in the past, famously bring a premature end to another Soweto giant’s Nedbank Cup ambitions back in 2024.

Another big Soweto scalp will undoubtedly be high on the Stallions agenda while the Buccaneers will be determined to scale a potentially tricky hurdle first up in their quest to retain their title.
