CECAFA U17: Laryea Kingston Leads Uganda to Glory After Penalty Shootout Drama

Ghanaian tactician Laryea Kingston has guided Uganda’s U17 national team, the Young Cranes, to the CECAFA regional title after a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout victory over Somalia in the final of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The two sides played out a goalless draw during regulation time, with neither team able to find a breakthrough in a closely contested encounter.

Both defences remained resolute throughout the match, limiting clear-cut opportunities and ensuring that the trophy would be decided from the penalty spot.

In the ensuing shootout, Uganda held its nerve to edge Somalia 6-5, securing the regional crown and sparking celebrations among the players and coaching staff.

The triumph represents a significant achievement for Kingston, who has continued to build his reputation as a coach focused on youth development and tactical discipline.

Under his guidance, the Young Cranes demonstrated resilience and composure in a high-pressure final, qualities that ultimately proved decisive in their pursuit of the title.

Uganda’s success also strengthens its standing in East African youth football as the team looks ahead to the continental stage.

For Kingston and his players, the victory provides a major confidence boost as they prepare for the next challenge in their development.
