Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are discussing the sale of their shares in Chelsea with Clearlake Capital, according to the Financial Times. Four years after the consortium acquired the London club for around €3 billion, the talks could significantly change the balance of power at Stamford Bridge.
The move would not involve a sale of Chelsea to an outside investor, but rather a transfer of shares between members of the ownership group that replaced Roman Abramovich in 2022.
Clearlake already controls more than 60% of Chelsea’s capital and could strengthen its position by acquiring Boehly and Walter’s stakes. Despite its majority ownership, the investment fund has shared control and governance with Boehly, who serves as chairman. This arrangement has regularly created disagreements over the club’s strategy, with the two sides developing different views on Chelsea’s management and future. The latest discussions could therefore help ease tensions that have affected the ownership group for several years.
No agreement has yet been reached, and the parties involved have declined to comment on the negotiations. A potential sale of Boehly and Walter’s shares could give Clearlake greater control as Chelsea continues its sporting rebuild under Xabi Alonso. The Blues have invested heavily in their squad since the takeover, but their Premier League results remain inconsistent, with the club finishing 10th last season. Chelsea could therefore experience another major change behind the scenes while continuing its transformation on the pitch.
