Nigeria’s mixed 4x400m relay quartet made history at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after setting a new Games Record in the event’s debut at the competition.
The Nigerian team of Edidiong Udo, Esther Joseph, Samuel Ogazi and Patience Okon-George delivered an impressive performance to win their heat in 3:14.58.
Their winning time established the first-ever Commonwealth Games Record for the mixed 4x400m relay, underlining Nigeria’s strong start in the event.
Nigeria held off Australia, who finished second in 3:15.21, with the Australian quartet also producing a strong performance but unable to match the pace of the Nigerian team.
The Nigerian quartet maintained their composure throughout the race, combining speed and efficient baton exchanges to secure victory and finish at the top of the heat.
The result means Nigeria enters the mixed 4x400m final in pole position, carrying the confidence of a record-breaking performance into the medal race.
With the final still to come, the Nigerian quartet will now look to turn their record-breaking heat performance into a Commonwealth Games gold medal.
The achievement also provides another major highlight for Nigeria’s athletics team, with Udo, Joseph, Ogazi and Okon-George putting the country firmly in contention for the inaugural mixed 4x400m title.
