EuromatchNPFL:Inter Lagos Hit With 3-Point Deduction, ₦5.25m Fine Over Match Officials Assault

Inter Lagos have been sanctioned by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) for multiple breaches of the NPFL27 Framework and Rules during their Matchday 7 fixture against Katsina United on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

The Lagos-based club was charged over inadequate security arrangements that allowed unauthorized persons to access restricted areas and attack match officials as they made their way from the dressing room to their vehicle after the game.

Inter Lagos were also found responsible for failing to ensure the proper conduct of their officials and supporters, resulting in the match officials being held for more than an hour after the match.

According to the NPFL disciplinary decision, club officials and some supporters allegedly intimidated, harassed and verbally abused the match officials in conduct capable of bringing the league into disrepute.

The league further stated that the Inter Lagos team manager, alongside some supporters, assaulted the match officials.

The incident left the first assistant referee with a facial injury, while some of his personal belongings were reportedly lost and his mobile phone damaged.

Inter Lagos Fined ₦5.25 Million

As part of the sanctions, Inter Lagos were fined ₦2 million for failing to provide adequate and effective security at the match venue.

The club was handed another ₦1 million fine for allowing the match officials to be held hostage for more than an hour following the fixture.

An additional ₦2 million fine was imposed for the assault on the match officials, while ₦250,000 was awarded as compensation to the affected assistant referee for the loss of personal items, damage to his mobile phone and medical treatment for the injury sustained.

Three Points and Three Goals Deducted

The most significant punishment is the deduction of three points and three goals from Inter Lagos’ accrued totals for assaulting and injuring the first assistant referee.

The sanctions could have a major impact on Inter Lagos’ position in the 2026/27 NPFL standings, depending on their current points and goal tally.

Inter Lagos have 48 hours from the date of the notice to appeal the disciplinary sanctions.
