FIFA president Gianni Infantino has called for greater support for smaller football nations after meeting representatives of the Caribbean Football Union in the Dominican Republic.
The Italian-Swiss leader wants to reduce the gap between the world’s biggest football countries and less powerful federations. “Some, unfortunately, don’t need or want others to grow, but we must reduce this gap between the big countries, the very big countries, and everyone else,” Infantino said, according to Marca.
Infantino also defended greater investment in football development across the world. He believes major football nations can continue to grow while smaller federations receive more resources and opportunities.
“We need to find investments for everyone, providing opportunities and resources for world football,” he explained. Amid controversy over the proposed sale of World Cup shares to private investors, Infantino also stressed the importance of listening to federations and said he felt “very happy with the support received” in the Caribbean.
