FIFA : UEFA, AFC and Concacaf challenge Gianni Infantino

A major governance crisis continues to shake FIFA as UEFA, the AFC and Concacaf have joined forces to challenge Gianni Infantino’s leadership. The three confederations expressed their concerns in a joint letter following the controversy over FIFA’s proposal to sell commercial shares of the World Cup.

They strongly rejected FIFA’s explanation that a “communication error” caused the controversy and called for an independent review of how the proposal emerged and reached the governing body’s decision-making process.

The three confederations placed governance and trust at the heart of their concerns. They argued that world football needs collective decision-making and criticized what they see as an excessive concentration of power around the FIFA president. They also questioned the meeting in Morocco, where some elected representatives reportedly did not receive an invitation. By publicly joining forces, UEFA, the AFC and Concacaf have created an unusually strong front against Infantino and increased the pressure on the FIFA president.

The dispute could now have major consequences for FIFA’s leadership and its relationship with the world’s continental confederations. The demand for an independent review puts the governing body’s internal processes under greater scrutiny, while the joint stance from three influential confederations highlights the depth of the disagreement. As tensions continue to rise, Infantino faces one of the strongest challenges of his presidency, with growing questions surrounding his future at the head of world football.
