FIFA WORLD CUP: Sam Johnson Urges Calm Amid Black Stars Goalkeeper Debate

Former Ghana international Sam Johnson has weighed in on the growing debate surrounding the Black Stars’ goalkeeping situation, calling for unity and restraint among fans.

In recent weeks, discussions over who should be Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper have intensified, with Lawrence Ati-Zigi and emerging contender Asare both drawing strong opinions from supporters. However, Johnson believes the conversation has taken an unnecessarily negative turn.

“Ghanaians thrive too much on negativity,” he said, expressing concern over the tone of public discourse.

The ex-international emphasized that Ati-Zigi’s experience remains valuable to the national team but insisted that the ultimate decision rests with the technical team.

“Ati-Zigi is an experienced goalkeeper, but whether it is him or Asare, it doesn’t matter,” Johnson noted. “Ghanaians need to let the coach do his job. All we have to do is support the team.”

His comments come at a time when the Black Stars are working to rebuild confidence and cohesion, with every selection decision coming under intense scrutiny.

Johnson’s message is clear: rather than fueling division, supporters should rally behind the team and trust the coaching staff to make the right calls as Ghana looks ahead to the upcoming world cup.
