Tusker FC were crowned Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Super Cup champions after defeating Gor Mahia 3-1 in the curtain-raising fixture to kick off the 2026/27 season at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.
The two teams were meeting ahead of the new season because Gor Mahia won the FKF Premier League title last season while Tusker settled for the domestic FKF Cup.
Tusker missed the best opportunity in the opening exchanges when a counter-attacking move almost saw Gor Mahia defender Bryton Onyona score into his own net, but the ball rolled out for a corner.
The Brewers, under coach Juliet Mette, kept pressing the Kenyan champions, and John Otieno saw his effort from the right wing stopped by goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi.
Two minutes later, Tusker’s Eugene Ikutwa dribbled past Gor Mahia defenders, but his effort from outside the area went inches wide. In the 16th minute, Gor Mahia threatened with new signing from Uganda Denis Omedi firing towards Brian Bwire, but the Tusker keeper did well to calm the situation.
Gor Mahia missed another great chance to break the deadlock when Ben Stanley skied his effort over the bar after Daniel Sakari’s long throw from the corner area. The missed opportunity irked Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor, who looked frustrated on the touchline.
However, it was Tusker who took the lead in the 33rd minute. A mistake by Frank Odhiambo gave Tusker a free-kick from outside the area. Fabian Adikiny delivered the free-kick, but it rebounded off a Gor Mahia defender, and Frank Oduor pounced with a superb left-footed effort which beat Katasi all the way.
Tusker then added the second from the restart in the 35th minute. Gor Mahia’s start from the centre of play was intercepted by Alvin Mangeni, who dribbled through the defenders before setting up Ikutwa.
The bulky midfielder controlled the ball, looked ahead, then unleashed a powerful strike that hit the top right corner of Gor Mahia’s net.
However, in the 38th minute, Gor Mahia reduced the deficit. A long throw from Sakari saw Ikutwa turn from a hero to villain, as he diverted the ball into his own net to give K’Ogalo a lifeline.
Tusker went into the half-time break enjoying a 2-1 lead. At the start of the second half, Gor Mahia started the strongest side, with Sakari’s long throws giving Tusker defenders difficult times.
Despite Gor Mahia’s pressure to level the scores, Tusker made it 3-1 in the 54th minute. Ian Simiyu did well to power home a diving header from a Yakeen Muteheli cross despite being tightly marked by captain Kibwage.
