President Adama Barrow on Monday honoured the heroic Gambia U-17 team with a stunning D2 million bonus at a grand reception at State House, celebrating their triumph as WAFU-A champions and reaffirming the nation’s unwavering support for its young footballing talent.
The festive ceremony saw the victorious squad, accompanied by Minister of Youth and Sports Bakary Y. Badjie, GFF President Kemo Ceesay, and key sports stakeholders, warmly received by the Head of State following their remarkable continental campaign.
Presenting the D2 million cheque, President Barrow commended the Scorplings for their dedication and grit on the international stage. He urged the players to remain disciplined, humble, and hardworking, describing football as a transformative force that can change lives and unite the nation.
“Winning the trophy against our good neighbours was never an easy feat, especially in such a tense atmosphere, but you managed to pull it off,” said Youth and Sports Minister Bakary Y. Badjie, praising the team’s mental toughness throughout the tournament.
He assured both the federation and the squad of full government backing to ensure meticulous preparations ahead of next year’s U-17 AFCON in Morocco.
Expressing appreciation for the government’s steadfast backing, GFF President Kemo Ceesay highlighted the seamless partnership between the federation, the Ministry, and the National Sports Council. He paid tribute to Head Coach Yahya Manneh and the entire technical staff for bringing the coveted trophy back home to Gambian soil.
Coach Yahya Manneh thanked the Presidency and advocated continued investment in local coaches to strengthen national team development further. Speaking on behalf of his teammates, player Samboujang Daffeh extended heartfelt appreciation to the government, the GFF, and the Gambian public for their unwavering support throughout their journey.
The high-profile delegation also included GFF third VP Demba Conateh, fourth VP Sainabou Cham, Executive Committee members, the General Secretary, officials from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and representatives of the National Scorpions Fan Club.
The memorable event concluded with a vibrant photo session, showcasing a united nation standing proudly behind its newly crowned regional champions.
