FIFA President Gianni Infantino will be in the spotlight when the U-20 Women’s World Cup gets underway in Poland on Saturday, just weeks after he was forced to abandon a controversial proposal involving the commercial rights to FIFA’s biggest tournaments.
Infantino is expected to attend the opening match in Katowice, where Poland will face Argentina, as the world football governing body begins another edition of its youth women’s competition.
A spokesperson for the Polish Football Association confirmed the FIFA president’s attendance, with about 15,000 spectators expected for the first two matches of the tournament.
Infantino’s Return Comes After $20bn Controversy
The FIFA president’s appearance comes against the backdrop of a major controversy that dominated football’s global administration in recent weeks.
Infantino withdrew his proposal in late July after fierce opposition from regional football governing bodies, including UEFA, and other influential stakeholders in the sport.
The abandoned plan reportedly placed a value of around $20 billion on the commercial rights to the World Cup and other FIFA competitions.
The proposal triggered concerns across the football community before Infantino eventually called off the plan.
U-20 Women’s World Cup Begins in Katowice
Despite the controversy, attention will now shift to the next generation of women’s football stars as the U-20 Women’s World Cup begins in Poland.
The tournament is considered an important development platform for young players looking to break into senior international football.
Several of the players competing in Poland will have their eyes on the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, with performances at the U-20 level potentially providing a pathway to senior national teams.
