Fresh concerns have emerged for the Super Eagles ahead of the Unity Cup after midfielder Alex Iwobi was forced off injured during Fulham’s goalless Premier League draw against Brentford.
Iwobi limped off in the 43rd minute after suffering a hamstring problem, raising fears he could miss Nigeria’s upcoming participation in the Unity Cup if the injury proves serious.
The 29-year-old remains one of the most experienced figures in the national team and his possible absence would be a major setback for the Super Eagles.
Iwobi has become a key creative outlet for Nigeria, providing balance in midfield with his ability to link play, drive forward and create chances.
Without him, the coaching crew may be forced to rethink their midfield options, especially against strong opposition where composure and experience will be needed.
His absence could also open the door for younger players to step in, but replacing his influence and leadership would be difficult.
Fulham manager Marco Silva, however, has moved to calm fears over the extent of the injury.
“From Alex’s initial reaction, it doesn’t seem too serious. We’ll have a clearer picture in the next 24 to 48 hours.
” It was a big blow losing him,” Silva said after the game.
Iwobi has enjoyed a solid campaign for Fulham this season, scoring four goals and providing three assists in 27 league appearances.
Nigeria will now await medical updates anxiously, with hopes that one of their most dependable stars will be fit in time for the Unity Cup.
