José Mourinho breaks silence on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal retirement

José Mourinho has reacted to Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to end his international career with Portugal, joining the growing list of football figures paying tribute to the legendary forward.

Ronaldo bows out after scoring 146 goals in 234 appearances for his country. Speaking at a press conference on Friday morning, the former Real Madrid manager shared his thoughts on the announcement, having worked with the Portuguese superstar between 2010 and 2013.

Mourinho insisted that Ronaldo’s decision deserves respect, while making it clear that the striker still has plenty to achieve at club level. “His decision must be respected, and I do respect it. He hasn’t finished his career yet. Those who know him know that he still has goals,” the coach explained. He also suggested that Ronaldo’s eventual retirement from professional football will carry even greater emotional significance.

Asked whether he could imagine Ronaldo becoming a coach after hanging up his boots, Mourinho admitted that he had no clear answer. “I don’t know what to say. It’s still too early,” he replied. For now, Mourinho believes the focus should remain on Ronaldo’s ongoing playing career rather than speculation about his next chapter in football.
