AshantiGoldO4 head coach Karim Zito has urged Asante Kotoko coach Erik Tinkler to adapt to the conditions of football in Ghana after the South African tactician raised concerns about the quality of playing surfaces.
Tinkler has previously criticised the state of pitches in Ghana, arguing that poor surfaces make it difficult for him to implement his possession-based style and improve his players.
Zito, however, believes Tinkler should have assessed the conditions before taking up the Kotoko job and encouraged him to adjust to the realities of the local game.
“He should adjust himself to the situation here. When they came for him, he should have come to assess all these things. The field is not good but he won the first Cup,” Zito said.
Tinkler has already guided Kotoko to silverware, despite his concerns over the playing conditions, underlining Zito’s point that teams must find ways to compete effectively regardless of the challenges.
The comments add another chapter to the growing debate over the standard of football pitches in Ghana, with Tinkler calling for improved facilities to help players develop and allow teams to play at a higher technical level.
