Kenya Sevens (Shujaa) revived their Hong Kong SVNS World Championship campaign with a hard-fought 17-10 victory over the United States to book a place in the main cup quarter-finals.
Coming into the match under pressure after back-to-back defeats, Shujaa rose to the occasion and did just enough to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. Kevin Wambua’s side showed composure and resilience to keep their hopes alive in the tournament.
The United States raced to a 10-0 lead, but Shujaa responded through John Okoth to cut the deficit to 10-7 at halftime. Denis Abukuse then put Kenya ahead before Nygel Amaitsa sealed the win with a late try, as Shujaa held firm defensively to close out the match.
Shujaa will now face South Africa in an African derby quarter-final clash scheduled for Saturday at 1:38 pm (EAT), following a challenging start that saw them fall to Australia and New Zealand in their opening matches.
