Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has expressed hope that a successful campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup will serve as a fitting tribute to victims of the May 9 Stadium Disaster.
The Minister drew a powerful connection between Ghana’s future on the global stage and one of the darkest moments in the country’s football history. He noted that as the Black Stars prepare for the tournament to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the memory of those lost must remain central to the nation’s football journey.
“We will once again be arriving in the USA, Canada, and Mexico for a major global event,” Adams said. “We pray that the departed souls will guide us and that our performance will further honor their memory.”
The May 9 disaster, which occurred at the Accra Sports Stadium in 2001, remains a defining tragedy in Ghanaian sport, with over 120 lives lost following crowd disturbances during a league match. Each year, the nation pauses to remember the victims while reinforcing calls for improved safety standards and fan awareness.
Adams emphasized the importance of remembrance, particularly for younger generations who did not witness the disaster. “Some supporters were not even born then; it is through such commemorations that they come to understand what truly happened,” he added.
His remarks underline a broader sentiment that Ghana’s pursuit of excellence at the 2026 World Cup should carry not just competitive ambition, but also a deeper emotional purpose rooted in history, memory, and national unity.
