Lionel Messi reaches 100 goals with Inter Miami

Lionel Messi continues to reach remarkable milestones at 39. On Wednesday, the Argentine scored his 100th goal for Inter Miami during a 2-0 victory over Cruz Azul in the Campeones Cup, helping the Florida club secure another trophy.

Luis Suárez, his former FC Barcelona teammate, provided the assist for Messi’s 24th-minute header, while Messi later set up Casemiro from a corner in the 81st minute. He reached 100 goals in just 115 appearances for Miami, exactly as he started his scoring journey with the club against Cruz Azul in July 2023, when he converted a free kick.

The victory also gave Messi the 49th trophy of his career across club and international football, including five since he joined Inter Miami in 2023. Casemiro praised the Argentine after the match, saying, “We have to enjoy it, because we don’t know how much longer it will last. What he has done and continues to do for football is simply incredible.” Messi’s latest achievement adds another chapter to his extraordinary career as he remains in contention for the next Ballon d’Or.

Messi also continues to prepare for his final international appearance with Argentina. After announcing his retirement from international football in late August, the 39-year-old plans to feature for La Albiceleste in Buenos Aires on October 6. He previously scored eight goals at the last World Cup, where Argentina lost the final, and now approaches the closing stages of his international career with another major milestone behind him.
