Lionel Messi already looks ready for the World Cup 2026. The Argentina captain returned to action during his team’s 3-0 victory against Iceland in their final preparation match before the tournament. After entering the match in the 69th minute, Messi quickly made an impact by scoring a penalty just three minutes later.
“Happy, I’m enjoying every moment and excited as always. I felt great, I was eager to get started and put away any fears you might have,” Messi said after the match during an interview with TyC Sports. The Inter Miami star also expressed confidence about Argentina’s physical condition before the competition officially begins. “We have a week to get everyone ready and arrive in good shape for the start of the competition.”
Argentina will face Algeria in its opening World Cup 2026 match on June 17, and Messi already sent a strong message to the Fennecs. “This is a winning group that always wants more. We’ll go there with a lot of desire, enthusiasm, and confidence in what we’re capable of. We’ll try, as we always have, to leave no doubt that we’re going to give it our all,” the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner declared.
