Milford FC secure promotion to Betway Premiership after stalemate

Milford FC booked their place in next season’s Betway Premiership after holding Magesi FC to a tense 1-1 draw in the decisive promotion/relegation play-off match at Seshego Stadium on Saturday.

With promotion and survival hanging in the balance, both teams entered the final fixture of the mini-league knowing exactly what was required.

Milford needed only a point to complete a historic rise to South African football’s top flight, while Magesi had no option but to win to retain their Premiership status.

After a fiercely contested encounter, it was Milford who celebrated at full-time. The result saw the KwaZulu-Natal outfit finish top of the play-off standings with seven points. Magesi ended second on five points, while Cape Town City finished bottom of the three-team table with four points.

Backed by home support in Limpopo, Magesi started with urgency and attacked aggressively from the opening whistle. Mcedi Vandala and Edmore Chirambadare looked lively early on and consistently tested the Milford defence.

Their pressure eventually paid off in the 14th minute. Former Kaizer Chiefs attacker Chirambadare produced a diving header after meeting a perfectly delivered cross from Reagan Van der Ross to put Dikwena Tsa Meetse ahead and ignite celebrations inside Seshego Stadium.

The goal appeared to wake Milford up and after spending much of the opening exchanges on the back foot, the visitors slowly settled into the match and began creating opportunities of their own. Siphosethu Ndlabi came close to levelling matters in the 21st minute but sent his effort over the crossbar.
