Liam Millar struck late to hand Hull City a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Coventry City in Saturday’s Premier League encounter between the newly promoted sides.
Nigeria internationals Semi Ajayi and Taiwo Awoniyi featured prominently for their respective clubs, Hull and Coventry, with both players completing the full 90 minutes.
However, Frank Onyeka was unavailable for Coventry after picking up a knock.
Ajayi came into the game on the back of a memorable start to the campaign, having scored Hull City’s opening goal of the season in their surprise 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the first round of fixtures.
Hull, widely tipped by many to struggle for survival before the start of the season, have now recorded back-to-back victories following another disciplined and clinical performance at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Coventry, who began their campaign with a 3-0 defeat to defending champions Arsenal, dominated large spells of the contest but found it difficult to turn possession into clear-cut chances.
Awoniyi came closest for the hosts in the first half when he failed to connect cleanly with a deflected cross from Loum Tchaouna.
His effort was nevertheless heading towards goal before Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis produced an important save.
Hull created the more dangerous opportunities as the match progressed.
Nobel Mendy tested Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth with a powerful long-range half-volley, while Millar missed a promising chance after weaving past two defenders before sending his effort wide.
The winger, however, redeemed himself eight minutes from time.
With Coventry pushing forward, Hull launched a swift counter-attack, and Mohamed Belloumi released Millar, who calmly finished to secure all three points for the visitors.
The result moved Hull City into second place in the Premier League standings after two matches, while Coventry remain without a point following their opening two fixtures.
Elsewhere, Everton rescued a point at the Vitality Stadium as James Tarkowski scored deep into stoppage time to earn the Toffees a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth.
