Quinton Fortune has urged South Africa to take a serious look at Max Conway after the 23-year-old Wanderers defender impressed during the early stages of the Championship season.
The former Premier League midfielder believes Bafana Bafana could strengthen their squad by widening their recruitment network across the UK and Europe, particularly among players with South African eligibility.
Born in Manchester, Conway has a potential route to international football through his maternal grandmother, who was born in Pretoria. The left-back has already shown interest in pursuing his eligibility to represent South Africa, opening the door to a possible future with Bafana Bafana. His performances for Wanderers could now place him firmly on the radar of the national team.
Fortune, who briefly played for Wanderers during their Premier League years under Sam Allardyce before making his name at Manchester United, is fully behind the idea. “South Africa should go get him—20 million percent!” he insisted. He also encouraged the federation to follow the example of national teams that have successfully identified eligible players abroad and integrated them into their squads.
