José Mourinho has offered a revealing look at his management philosophy, insisting that footballers must treat the game as a way of life rather than simply a job.
Speaking on “Bet it drive show: a ride in Madrid with Yevhen Krazhan,” the Real Madrid manager urged young players to understand the sacrifices required at the highest level. For Mourinho, diet, sleep, private life and even leisure activities can all affect a player’s performance.
The Portuguese coach also explained how he approaches discipline. Some rules, he insists, leave no room for negotiation. Arriving late for training remains unacceptable, regardless of a player’s status or reputation. However, Mourinho takes a completely different view once the match begins. He wants his players to use their talent, creativity and intuition to break away from the planned structure when the situation demands it.
Mourinho also admitted that he sometimes trusts his own intuition during matches instead of simply following the plan prepared with his staff. He believes those spontaneous decisions can produce extraordinary results and even described some of them as moments of “divine inspiration.” His message to his players is clear: discipline matters away from the pitch, but once the game starts, talent and instinct should have the freedom to take over.
