Ronald Donkor Earns First Black Stars Call-Up for AFCON Qualifiers

New York Red Bulls midfielder Ronald Donkor has received his first senior call-up to the Ghana national team after being included in Carlos Queiroz’s squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The 20-year-old has been rewarded for his performances in Major League Soccer, where he has established himself as an important player for New York Red Bulls.

Donkor’s performances had already attracted attention from the Ghanaian football public. In July 2025, he said he was working towards earning a Black Stars invitation after impressing in MLS, having recorded two assists in a match against New England Revolution. At the time, he had not yet received a senior national-team call-up.

His opportunity has now arrived under Queiroz, with Donkor named among the five midfielders for Ghana’s September assignments.

The midfielder joins Kwasi Sibo, Caleb Yirenkyi, Augustine Boakye and Ibrahim Sulemana in the squad.

Donkor will have the opportunity to make his senior international debut when Ghana begin their AFCON qualifying campaign against Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on September 24.

The Black Stars will then face The Gambia in Accra on September 29, before travelling to Morocco for an international friendly against the Atlas Lions in Tangier on October 4.
