South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has opened up on the physical and mental toll of an intense campaign, while remaining self-critical despite his side’s resilient performance in their recent outing against AS FAR.
The 34-year-old goalkeeper, who has been a central figure for both club and country, reflected on a demanding schedule that included the FIFA Club World Cup, the Africa Cup of Nations, and the CAF Champions League.
“It’s been a tough season, a tough year for me, playing so many games,” Williams said after the final. “So many games, it’s not easy, and I can feel it. This wasn’t obviously my best season, and we, as a team, will just be better.”
Despite the heavy workload, Williams did not shy away from criticism of his own performance, particularly focusing on the penalty he conceded during the match.
“I’m hard on myself. I’m disappointed with the penalty I gave away. It was a soft one to concede; it wasn’t a strong shot, and I obviously spilt it. I’ll be better; I’ll be energised,” he admitted.
Williams also acknowledged the challenge posed by AS FAR, who started strongly with the backing of their home supporters.
“They made it difficult; they came out with energy, and obviously they had the support behind them,” he said. “But I think we contained them. We didn’t give them too many chances. Our game plan was spot on.”
While conceding that the team did not reach their peak performance levels, the goalkeeper praised the collective resilience that saw them fight back.
“We didn’t play to our best. We just played winning football because we got the job done at home. To come here and get the equaliser speaks volumes for the team, the mentality to go a goal behind and keep fighting and grinding. I’m so proud of this team.”
Looking ahead, Williams shifted focus to the international stage, expressing hope for a strong showing with the national side and the opportunity to recharge after a relentless season.
“Hopefully, now we can go as Team South Africa, have a wonderful World Cup, and then after that, just have a much-needed rest just to clear the mind and look forward to next season again.”
