Senegal Launches Bid to Host AFCON Again After 40 Years

Senegal has officially begun preparations to bid for the Africa Cup of Nations for the second time in its history, forty years after hosting the 1992 edition of the continental tournament.

The announcement was made by Khady Diène Gaye, who confirmed that the West African nation is actively working on its candidacy to stage Africa’s biggest football competition once again.

Senegal last hosted the tournament in 1992, an edition won by Côte d’Ivoire after defeating Ghana on penalties in the final. Since then, the country has grown into one of African football’s major powerhouses both on and off the pitch.

Backed by modern sporting infrastructure, improved stadium facilities, and experience in hosting international competitions, Senegal is expected to position itself strongly in the race for future AFCON hosting rights.

The announcement adds another major ambition to Senegal’s football project, with the country continuing to build on the success of recent years, including winning its first-ever AFCON title in 2022.
