Patrick Vieira has made an unbeaten start as Senegal coach, but his first two matches have already sparked criticism at home. The 50-year-old took charge after the Senegalese Football Federation appointed him on August 18, replacing Pape Thiaw.
Vieira opened his tenure with a 1-1 draw against Mozambique on September 25 before Senegal edged Ethiopia 1-0 four days later in an AFCON 2027 qualifier. Despite the results, local media have questioned the team’s performances, particularly its lack of attacking rhythm and control.
Senegal struggled to impose itself against Ethiopia at Bahir Dar Stadium, even after Ibrahim Mbaye gave the Lions the lead. Wiwisport described the victory as a narrow escape and criticized Senegal’s sluggish tempo, poor passing and frequent losses of possession. The outlet praised Nicolas Jackson and Mbaye but questioned the team’s collective display. Senenews also highlighted the unconvincing performance, while some supporters expressed concern about Vieira’s tactical approach. The coach has also made significant choices within his squad, including leaving captain Kalidou Koulibaly on the bench for both matches. Vieira instead used Sadibou Sané against Mozambique and deployed a three-man defense against Ethiopia without bringing Koulibaly onto the pitch.
Vieira now faces growing pressure to convince both the Senegalese media and supporters that his project can deliver stronger performances. His decision to give opportunities to younger players has attracted attention, while Sadio Mané missed this international window because of a physical issue. Some supporters remain willing to give the former France captain time, but others have already voiced strong criticism. One fan summed up the mood after the Ethiopia victory by saying: “The result is there, but the gameplay isn’t.” Vieira will have the November international window to address those concerns and give Senegal a more convincing identity.
