Guinean international Serhou Guirassy experienced every emotion imaginable as Borussia Dortmund edged out Villarreal 3–2 at a rocking Signal Iduna Park.
Marking his landmark 100th appearance for BVB, the talismanic striker managed to score twice at the right end before inadvertently deflecting a ball into his own net during stoppage time, capping off an eventful opener in European competition.
Following a cagey, goalless first half where Guirassy saw his best effort smothered before the interval, the match exploded into life after the break.
Dortmund initially seized the lead in the 53rd minute when Renato Veiga’s cross deflected off a defender into the net for an own goal. However, Villarreal hit back in the 66th minute through a precise header from Santiago Mouriño off a Georges Mikautadze corner, setting up a frantic final quarter-hour.
With the match hanging in the balance, Guirassy asserted his dominance inside the box. In the 80th minute, substitute Fábio Silva latched onto a loose ball and slid a low pass across the six-yard box, where Guirassy anticipated expertly to turn the ball home and restore Dortmund’s advantage.
Just five minutes later, the striker was brought down inside the penalty area by Mouriño. Guirassy stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot to make it 3–1 and seemingly put the result beyond doubt.
The drama was far from over. In the 93rd minute (90+3′), a desperate goalmouth scramble inside Dortmund’s box saw a ricochet strike Guirassy and loop past Gregor Kobel into his own net.
The unusual goal wrote Guirassy into Champions League history as the first player ever to score multiple goals and an own goal in the same fixture. Despite five tense minutes of stoppage time, Dortmund held firm to seal all three points.
