Serie A backs Malagò in race for FIGC presidency

Serie A backs Malagò in race for FIGC presidency

Serie A clubs have taken a major step in Italian football politics by backing Giovanni Malagò as their candidate for the presidency of the Italian Football Federation. During a meeting in Milan, 18 out of 20 clubs voted in favor, sending a strong signal ahead of the election scheduled for May 22. Only Lazio and Hellas Verona abstained, citing procedural concerns rather than opposition to the candidate.

This support represents a significant political move, even if Serie A holds a limited share of voting power within the electoral system. Serie A now positions itself at the center of the debate, as Ezio Simonelli stressed the need for reform, stating that Italian football must focus on “a recovery plan” after recent disappointments. He also highlighted the importance of cooperation with the government, particularly with Sports Minister Andrea Abodi, to restore competitiveness at all levels.

As the election approaches, other potential candidates such as Giancarlo Abete, Demetrio Albertini, and Damiano Tommasi could still enter the race. Discussions are also expected to focus on key sporting decisions, including the future of the national team bench.

The coming weeks will be decisive as Italian football prepares for a new era under the leadership of the next FIGC president.
