Steven Gerrard Defends Mohamed Salah’s Decision Not to End Career at Liverpool

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has backed Mohamed Salah’s decision to move on rather than insist on finishing his illustrious career at Anfield.

Salah, who established himself as one of Liverpool’s greatest modern-era players during his time at the club, entered the later stages of his career with questions surrounding his future and whether he should have remained at Liverpool until retirement.

However, Gerrard believes a footballer’s priority towards the end of their career should be continuing to play regularly, contribute to the team and enjoy the game.

“I don’t think necessarily every footballer has to finish their career at the club where they’ve shown for so long,” Gerrard said. “I think what’s important when you come to the latter stages of your career, that you continue to enjoy it.”

The former Liverpool captain also stressed the importance of having the trust of a manager and remaining a regular starter rather than becoming a squad player.

“That a manager appreciates you, that you’re still starting football matches,” Gerrard added.

Reflecting on his own experience at Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers, Gerrard admitted he faced a similar situation towards the end of his career and did not want to see his playing time reduced.

“I was in a similar situation myself under Brendan Rodgers. And with all due respect, no hard feelings, I didn’t want to be a squad player,” he said.

For Gerrard, a successful ending to a football career is not necessarily defined by staying at one club until retirement, but by remaining influential and enjoying the final chapter.

“It’s important that you see a career out where you’re enjoying it. You’re still playing, you’re still contributing and you feel important,” he concluded.
