Super Falcons’ WAFCON Build-Up Hit by Friendly Cancellation

Nigeria’s senior women’s team, the Super Falcons, have encountered a disruption in their preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations following the withdrawal of Cape Verde from a scheduled set of friendly matches.

The Falcons were due to take on Cape Verde in a two-game series at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, with fixtures initially fixed for April 15 and April 18, 2026.

The matches were part of the team’s build-up plan ahead of the continental showpiece in Morocco this July.

However, both sides have now confirmed that the fixtures will not go ahead after Cape Verde opted out.

The late change has also impacted travel and camp arrangements, with some invited Nigerian players experiencing delays in joining up with the squad.

The cancelled friendlies were expected to offer the coaching crew a valuable window to evaluate players, strengthen team chemistry, and blend emerging talents with experienced members of the squad.

In response, the Nigeria Football Federation is likely to seek alternative opponents to ensure the team remains adequately prepared for the tournament.

As the most decorated side in the competition’s history, the Super Falcons will be aiming to maintain their dominance, making quality pre-tournament matches a key part of their strategy heading into WAFCON 2026.
