Ghanaian players featured across the opening matchweek of the UEFA Champions League, with Antoine Semenyo, Rahim Ibrahim and Kojo Oppong Peprah all involved for their respective clubs.
Semenyo was the first Ghanaian to take to the European stage, featuring for Manchester City in their 2-0 victory over FC Porto on Tuesday. The forward was handed 62 minutes as City secured an important away win to begin their Champions League campaign on a positive note. Semenyo’s involvement marked another significant step in his development at the highest level of European club football.
On Wednesday, Slovan Bratislava midfielder Rahim Ibrahim was also given an opportunity to showcase his talents against French champions Paris Saint-Germain. Ibrahim played for an hour before being substituted, as Slovan suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat at home. Despite the disappointing result for his side, the Ghanaian midfielder gained valuable experience against one of Europe’s elite teams.
Thursday saw another Ghanaian named in a Champions League squad, with Kojo Oppong Peprah included among the substitutes for Fenerbahçe’s meeting with AS Roma. However, the young Ghanaian remained on the bench throughout the 1-1 draw and was unable to make his long awaited Champions League debut.
Across the three matchdays, Ghana therefore had three representatives involved in the opening round of Europe’s premier club competition, although only Semenyo and Ibrahim saw playing time. For Oppong Peprah, the wait for his first Champions League appearance continues.
With the group and league phase campaign still in its early stages, the Ghanaian contingent will be hoping for more opportunities, stronger performances and further milestones as the competition progresses. Their presence underlines the growing involvement of Ghanaian talent on one of football’s biggest club stages.
