Vladimir Petković is set to leave his position as Algeria head coach after reaching an agreement with the Algerian Football Federation (FAF). According to beIN Sports Arabic, the 62-year-old coach will end his tenure just weeks after Algeria’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Fennecs lost 2-0 to Switzerland in the Round of 32, bringing their campaign to an early end.
Petković took charge of Algeria in February 2024 and recorded 24 wins, nine draws and six defeats during his tenure. The Swiss-Bosnian coach also guided the Fennecs to the quarter-finals of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. His biggest achievement came with Algeria’s return to the World Cup, ending a 12-year absence from football’s biggest international tournament.
The decision brings an end to a tenure that had already appeared increasingly uncertain in recent weeks. Petković leaves with a strong record and after helping Algeria achieve one of its major objectives by reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The FAF will now have to find a new coach to lead the Fennecs into the next stage of their international project.
