WAFCON 2026: Boaduwaa, Own Goal Hand Ghana Winning Start to WAFCON 2026 Campaign

Ghana’s Black Queens opened their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign with an impressive 2-0 victory over Cape Verde, producing a dominant display from start to finish.

The Black Queens made their bright start count in the seventh minute when forward Boaduwaa calmly lifted the ball over the advancing Cape Verde goalkeeper to hand Ghana a deserved 1-0 lead. The well-executed finish capped off an early spell of sustained pressure, with Ghana controlling possession and forcing their opponents deep into their own half.

Despite enjoying long spells on the ball, the Queens were unable to extend their advantage before the interval but continued to dictate the tempo after the restart.

Their persistence paid off in the 53rd minute when Doris delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area, forcing a Cape Verde defender into an own goal as Ghana doubled their advantage.

Cape Verde attempted to mount a comeback, but Ghana’s defence remained solid. In the 73rd minute, goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan was called into action and comfortably collected a tame effort to preserve her clean sheet.

The Black Queens nearly added a third goal 10 minutes from time when Chantel unleashed a curling effort that narrowly missed the target by inches.

Ghana expertly managed the closing stages before the final whistle confirmed a deserved 2-0 victory, marking an ideal start to their WAFCON 2026 campaign and providing an early boost in their quest for success at the tournament.
