The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has rejected Edo Queens’ appeal to be reinstated as champions of the WAFU Women’s Champions League final against Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies.
The decision means the ruling requiring the final to proceed into extra time remains in place, following the controversy surrounding the original match proceedings.
Edo Queens had challenged the outcome in an attempt to have the title awarded to them. However, CAF’s rejection of the appeal leaves the earlier ruling unchanged, paving the way for the extra-time proceedings to go ahead as previously directed.
The dispute has attracted attention across West African women’s football, with both clubs seeking clarity over the circumstances surrounding the final.
For Ampem Darkoa Ladies, the ruling keeps the contest alive as they prepare to continue the battle for continental qualification and regional supremacy.
Edo Queens, meanwhile, will have to accept CAF’s decision as the matter moves towards its next stage.
The resumption of the final in extra time is expected to determine the regional champions, bringing an end to a controversy that has overshadowed the encounter.
