Ghana’s Black Queens staged a spirited comeback to defeat Côte d’Ivoire 2–1, turning the game around after conceding an early penalty and putting themselves in a strong position in the race for World Cup qualification.
Côte d’Ivoire took the lead as early as the second minute after being awarded a penalty, which was calmly converted to put the hosts 1–0 ahead.
Ghana responded with increased attacking intent and came agonisingly close to an equaliser in the 16th minute when Princess saw her effort flash narrowly across the face of goal.
The Black Queens continued to apply pressure as the first half progressed, but Côte d’Ivoire held onto their advantage at the break.
Ghana’s persistence finally paid off in the 58th minute when Princess rose highest to head home a well-delivered corner, restoring parity and setting up a tense final half-hour.
The equaliser gave Ghana renewed confidence, and the Black Queens continued to press forward in search of the winning goal.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 72nd minute when Ghana were awarded a penalty. Josephine Bonsu stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to complete the comeback and give Ghana a 2–1 lead.
Côte d’Ivoire pushed desperately for an equaliser, with Cynthia Konlan called into action in the 78th minute. The Ghana goalkeeper produced a timely save to preserve her side’s advantage.
Ghana remained disciplined in the closing stages and held on for a crucial 2–1 victory.
The comeback victory significantly boosts the Black Queens’ chances of securing qualification for the World Cup, with Ghana now carrying a valuable advantage into the decisive stage of the qualification battle.
