Former Barcelona boss Xavi Hernández has been appointed as the new head coach of the Netherlands, taking over from Ronald Koeman after the Dutch side’s disappointing World Cup campaign.
The 46 year old Spaniard has signed a four year contract that will keep him in charge through the 2030 FIFA World Cup as the Dutch Football Association begins a new era under one of the most decorated midfielders of his generation.
Xavi replaces Koeman, who resigned after three years at the helm following the Netherlands’ round of 32 elimination by Morocco at this summer’s World Cup.
The appointment marks Xavi’s return to international management after a spell away from the dugout. His most recent coaching role was at Barcelona, where he managed the Catalan giants from 2021 until 2024.
Xavi enjoyed a successful playing career with Barcelona and Spain, winning numerous major honours while establishing himself as one of the finest midfielders in modern football. His understanding of possession based football and tactical development is expected to shape the Netherlands’ approach under his leadership.
The Dutch federation will now hope Xavi can build a competitive side capable of challenging for major international honours, with the 2030 World Cup serving as a major long term target.
His first task will be to restore confidence within the squad and establish a clear tactical identity as the Netherlands look to move beyond their early World Cup exit.
