Zambia Super League: Power Dynamos suffer defeat on opening day

Zambia Super League champions Power Dynamos suffered a 2–1 defeat to Konkola Blades in their opening fixture at Konkola Stadium in Chililabombwe this afternoon.

The hosts took the lead inside the opening minute when Clive Biyeta produced a composed finish over Willard Mwanza, sending the home supporters into celebration. Konkola Blades came close to doubling their advantage soon after, with experienced striker Idriss Mbombo wasting a good opportunity after he miscued his effort, much to the relief of the visitors.

Dynamos were dealt another blow in the 41st minute when defender Kondwani Chiboni was stretchered off following an injury. Ronel Manyanga was introduced in his place and almost made an immediate impact, but his effort was comfortably saved shortly before half-time.

Dynamos made a change at the interval, with Wilson Chisala replacing captain Salulani Phiri as the visitors looked to find a way back into the contest. Further changes followed as Andy Boyeli and Owen Tembo were introduced for Frederick Mulambia and Linos Makwaza Jr.

Dynamos eventually found their equaliser in the 82nd minute after Jackson Mulambia was brought down inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to point to the spot.

Amine Hiver stepped up and calmly converted from 12 yards to restore parity and give the visitors hope of leaving Chililabombwe with a point. However, the leveller lasted only a few minutes. Konkola Blades regained the lead after a corner resulted in an unfortunate own goal by Wilson Chisala , leaving Dynamos with little time to find another response.

The defending champions pushed forward in search of a second equaliser, but Konkola Blades held firm to secure maximum points and condemn Dynamos to defeat on the opening day.

Dynamos will now turn their attention to their next fixture, when they host Nchanga Rangers at Arthur Davies Stadium as they look to bounce back from their disappointing start.
