Zambia Super League: ZESCO United go down fighting against Green Eagles

ZESCO United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Green Eagles in their first home game of the season at Trade Fair Grounds in a Week Two MTN Super League encounter.

Despite creating several chances, ZESCO were unable to find the back of the net, while Green Eagles striker Amity Shamende scored the only goal of the match to secure all three points for the visitors.

The home side created the first notable opportunity in the 17th minute, but Brice Sindjo’s header was saved by Eagles goalkeeper Mangani Banda. ZESCO continued to threaten, with defender Benedict Chepeshi’s goal-bound effort in the 29th minute cleared by the visitors’ backline.

Six minutes before the break, debutant Rally Bwalya also tested Banda, but the goalkeeper made another save to keep the scores level at half-time. Abraham Siankombo replaced Bwalya at the restart as ZESCO continued their search for an opener.

In the 48th minute, Antony Shipanuka came on for Sindjo as ZESCO looked to break the deadlock. However, it was Green Eagles who took the lead 15 minutes from normal time when Shamende capitalised on a miscued clearance by Gift Mpande before lobbing goalkeeper Patrick Chooma.

ZESCO made another change in the 80th minute, with Kelvin Kampamba replacing Allan Mumba, but the home side could not find an equaliser as Green Eagles held on for a 1-0 victory.

ZESCO will now turn their attention to Wednesday’s Week Three encounter against Roan United in Luanshya.
