Xherdan Shaqiri of Switzerland announced his retirement from international football on Monday, after 125 caps with the Swiss national team.
Shaqiri, 32, who currently plays for the Chicago Fire in the United States, is Switzerland’s second most capped player, trailing only teammate Granit Xhaka, who has 130 caps.
In March 2010, at the age of 18, the former Bayern Munich and Liverpool star made his international debut.

He has competed in four World Cups and three European Championships for his country.
Shaqiri scored in a penalty shoot-out as England defeated Switzerland 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in their Euro 2024 quarterfinal in Duesseldorf on July 6.
“Seven tournaments, many goals, 14 years with the Swiss national team and unforgettable moments.
“It’s time to say goodbye to the national team. Great memories remain and I say to you all: thank you!”, the winger said in posts on social media.
Shaqiri departs as Switzerland’s fourth-leading goalscorer with 32, trailing only Alexander Frei (42), Kubilay Turkyilmaz, and Max Abegglen (34).
