CAF Champions League CAFCL: Gor Mahia eliminate El Merriekh Bentiu, to face giants Al Ahly

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League champions Gor Mahia will face defending champions Al Ahly of Egypt in the second round of the CAF Champions League after eliminating El Merriekh Bentiu of South Sudan 5-2 on aggregate on Sunday.

In the fixture at Nyayo Stadium attended by Cabinet Secretary for Sports Murkomen, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, FKF President Nick Mwendwa among others, K’Ogalo were forced to come from a goal down to beat the stubborn visitors.

Heading into the return leg fixture, Gor Mahia had suffered a 1-0 first leg defeat at Juba National Stadium a fortnight ago and they found themselves trailing again after El Merriekh took the lead with only six minutes played.

However, Gor Mahia sparked a comeback after Chris Ochieng put them level before Alpha Onyango made it 2-1 to the delight of the fans at Nyayo Stadium.

New signing Alphonse Omija then made it 3-1 in the 34th minute. The goal came after El Merriekh goalkeeper had gone down citing a challenge from midfielder Austin Odhiambo but K’Ogalo fans and players felt it was a time wasting tactic.

Leadihg 3-1 at the half-time break, Gor Mahia continued to attack for more goals and it was Rooney Onyango who sealed a hat-trick to send the record Kenyan champions to an emphatic 5-1 win and a date with the Egyptian giants.
