South Africa South Africa Faces Potential Points Deduction for Fielding Ineligible Player

South Africa risks losing three crucial points in the FIFA World Cup African Qualifiers after fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in their recent 2-0 victory over Lesotho. Mokoena, who had previously received two yellow cards in consecutive matches against Benin and Zimbabwe, was supposed to serve a suspension during the match against Lesotho. However, he was included in the squad and played in the game.

Currently leading Group C, South Africa now faces possible disciplinary action as per the 2026 World Cup preliminary rule book. The regulations clearly state that any player who accumulates two yellow cards in different matches must serve a one-game suspension. Mokoena’s participation in the Lesotho match was therefore a violation of these rules.

In relation to this, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has begun moves to officially challenge South Africa’s decision to field Mokoena. The NFF aims to establish a strong case against the South African Football Association (SAFA) and has submitted an official complaint to FIFA. If found guilty, South Africa could face a three-point deduction, which would have significant implications for their World Cup qualification campaign.

With South Africa currently leading Group C, losing three points could alter the dynamics of the group and open the door for other teams vying for a spot at the 2026 World Cup.

FIFA is expected to review the case in the coming days, and a ruling on the matter could shape the future of Group C’s qualification race. If FIFA upholds the complaint, their path to the World Cup could become much more challenging.
