2026 FIFA World Cup: Ivory Coast star Elye Wahi at the center of an investigation

An investigation opened in France targeting Elye Wahi concerns suspicions of sports betting linked to alleged events that occurred before the 2026 World Cup.

According to several media outlets, including The Athletic, Elye Wahi is the subject of an investigation in France related to suspected sports betting.

The Ivorian player was reportedly questioned by investigators in a case concerning possible match-fixing, specifically the alleged deliberate yellow card shown during the Ligue 1 match between Nice and Metz on May 17, before the start of the 2026 World Cup.

This situation is said to have drawn the attention of judicial authorities to a potential link with sports betting, although no conclusions have been reached at this stage.

The Marseille prosecutor’s office has confirmed the opening of an investigation into several alleged offenses, including organised fraud, organized sports corruption, receiving stolen goods, and money laundering.

The player was questioned by investigators before being released without charge or conviction. Elye Wahi was subsequently called up and participated with Ivory Coast in the tournament, without any disciplinary or legal decision preventing his participation.

At this stage, neither the Ivorian Football Federation nor international governing bodies have officially commented on the matter, and the player has not spoken publicly. The investigation remains ongoing.
