2026 FIFA WORLD CUP: Maza Reflects on Algeria Defeat, Hails Messi’s Decisive Impact

Algeria midfielder Ibrahim Maza admitted that the early stages of his side’s FIFA World Cup clash against Argentina proved costly, while insisting the match could have unfolded differently had Algeria’s disallowed goal stood.

Speaking after Algeria’s 3-0 defeat, Maza praised the atmosphere surrounding the encounter and rejected suggestions that Argentina had completely dominated proceedings throughout the contest.

“Yes, of course, the atmosphere was incredible. I wouldn’t say they completely outplayed us; it was just about the start of the match,” Maza said.

The young midfielder pointed to a pivotal moment when Algeria thought they had found the breakthrough, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. According to Maza, that decision significantly altered the trajectory of the game.

“If the goal we scored hadn’t been ruled offside, the game would have taken a completely different path—but yes, it was offside,” he added.

Despite Algeria’s efforts to stay in the contest, Maza acknowledged the decisive influence of Argentine captain Lionel Messi, who delivered another masterclass by scoring all three goals.

“And as you know, unfortunately, Messi managed to score a hat-trick, but that’s just typical Messi,” Maza remarked.

The result gives strength to Argentina’s position in Group J, while Algeria will now turn their attention to their next fixture as they seek to revive their World Cup campaign after suffering a setback against the reigning South American giants.
