Thomas Tuchel has attracted worldwide criticism after England suffered a painful 2-1 defeat against Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinal.
The German coach surprised many observers when he made defensive substitutions with his team leading 1-0 and 30 minutes remaining. His decisions allowed Argentina to push forward, while Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez scored late goals to complete the comeback.
English pundits quickly questioned Tuchel’s approach after the elimination. Former England striker Wayne Rooney said: “We sat back and let them come at us. They created chances, and we finally cracked. I’m really disappointed. The changes we made didn’t help us. I’m devastated.” Several international media outlets also attacked the coach’s strategy, with some describing his choices as one of the worst managerial performances in the final stages of a World Cup.
Criticism also came from Germany, where former internationals analyzed Tuchel’s tactics. Mats Hummels said: “They simply barricaded themselves. Right after they went 1-0 up, Harry Kane cleared the ball from his own penalty spot. They retreated far too early.” Bastian Schweinsteiger added: “You have to have confidence to attack.”
England will now prepare for the third-place match against France, but Tuchel must rebuild confidence after a dramatic setback at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
