2026 FIFA World Cup: Vladimir Petkovic Splits Opinion in Algeria

While Algeria’s run in the 2026 World Cup came to an end in the Round of 16, the Vladimir Petkovic controversy is taking center stage and dividing public opinion.

Things aren’t exactly rosy right now in Algeria between national team coach Vladimir Petkovic and Algerian soccer observers.

In fact, the coach’s every move is under scrutiny. First, following the Fennecs elimination against Switzerland, a video of Petkovic went viral.

It shows him congratulating himself with a broad smile, seemingly unconcerned about his players, who were saddened by the defeat.

Furthermore, the Algerian national team’s style of play is a subject of debate. Many former Algerian internationals are criticizing the Swiss coach’s approach.

Following Islam Slimani, Rafik Halliche lambasted the Swiss-Bosnian coach, stating: “I don’t understand Petkovic believe me, I don’t understand him. He’s mixing everything up: no players in their proper positions, no one in their rightful place. It’s a tactical mess and the level of play is very low; under Petkovic, the team has no identity. He completely erased (Ibrahim) Maza from the game, as if he were invisible for 90 minutes.”

And to make matters worse, Vladimir Petkovic’s contract has been extended by the Algerian Football Federation. The future promises to be deeply troubling.
