2026 FIFA World Cup: wildfire smoke threatens final

Smoke from the massive Canadian wildfires has raised fresh concerns ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina in New York.

After weeks of extreme heat, thunderstorms, and heavy rain during the tournament, organizers now face another unexpected challenge as deteriorating air quality affects the host city. Health concerns have emerged for both players and supporters just days before Sunday’s showpiece.

According to reports, the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached “very unhealthy” levels in parts of New York and New Jersey, with some monitoring stations even recording “hazardous” conditions. Spain continued training in New Jersey, but officials will rely on AQI readings rather than visible smoke to decide whether the final can proceed as scheduled. At this stage, FIFA has not announced any plans to postpone the match.

The poor air quality already disrupted a National Women’s Soccer League match between Gotham FC and the Washington Spirit, where officials introduced additional breaks. Trinity Rodman questioned the decision to continue the game, saying: “Without making excuses, I think on both sides, we were all thinking: ‘One more break, one more break, one more break.'” Weather forecasts predict heavy rain before the final, offering hope that conditions will improve in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
