Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress have booked their place in the final of the 2026 FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket after defeating hosts Côte d’Ivoire 53-50 in a tense semi-final clash in Abidjan.
The Nigerian girls showed remarkable composure in a closely contested encounter, holding off a strong challenge from the home side to secure a narrow three-point victory and advance to back-to-back AfroBasket finals.
The victory also comes with a major reward beyond the continental title. By reaching the final, Nigeria have secured one of Africa’s two qualification spots for the 17th FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup, scheduled to take place in Chengdu, China, from July 17 to 25, 2027.
The achievement underlines Nigeria’s growing consistency at the youth level and gives the Junior D’Tigress another opportunity to compete for continental honours.
Nigeria were also finalists at the 2024 FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket in Pretoria, South Africa, where they finished as runners-up after losing the final to Mali.
Two years later, the Junior D’Tigress have returned to the championship match with another chance to go one step further and claim the African crown.
The latest victory against Côte d’Ivoire will therefore be celebrated not only for securing a place in the final but also for guaranteeing Nigeria a place at next year’s global U19 championship.
With a second consecutive final appearance now secured, attention turns to the championship decider.
For the Junior D’Tigress, the objective is clear: after settling for silver in 2024, they will be hoping to convert this opportunity into gold and finally lift the FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket trophy.
